Personality Development

What is personality?

Personality is what makes a man who he is• It is the inherent characteristics that define a man’s character• The way he carries himself, his attitude, and the way he approaches every aspect of life makes up his personality• Society judges a person based on his personality• A man’s success, both on the personal and professional front, depends to a large extent on this

It is Personality that Matters

People generally don’t realize how important personality development is• If we believe that success depends on the impression that we make on the other person, then it is perhaps the most important aspect of our character• Especially on the professional front, developing a good personality is the key to success

Different Layers of Personality

Some of the characteristics that make up a person’s personality are -• Honesty• Attitude• Courage• Steadfastness• Perseverance• Humility• Individuality

How to Change Your Character

The importance of possessing a good personality cannot be over-stressed• Some small changes in one’s outlook and thinking can go a long way in improving one’s character• Belief in oneself, and the desire to succeed are the only prerequisites for this process

Influence of Thought

Thoughts control a man’s actions• We should adopt positive thinking in our day-to- day life• Positive thinking incorporates within itself the belief in oneself- the belief that one can achieve whatever one desires• Always remember the immortal line – “I THINK, therefore I AM”

Controlling Negative Emotions

Negative Emotions- Jealousy, Anger, Cowardice, Denial etc.• Work towards keeping all negative emotions away from yourself• These will sap you of your will-power, will impede success• A successful man never lets these emotions get the best of him• So rid yourself of those feelings and emotions that weaken your resolve

Take Responsibility

Hallmark of all achievers• Be the first in the group to take responsibility for a given job – be a leader!• Inspire others by your work, make them want to live up to your standards – Lead from the front• If you fail, take responsibility for your failure, and work on your shortcomings

How to Work?

Work to the best of your abilities – like a master!• Never be selfish in your work, a true leader puts others before self• Work for the common good – ask yourself if what you are doing will benefit society at large• Love your work and believe in your capabilities• Put all your effort into the task at hand – if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again

Be Strong

Be strong in the face of adversity• A man’s true character is revealed in the face of great difficulties• Never give in to weakness• Every hurdle is a learning step• Experience gained through adverse times are the best lessons• Be a role model for others!

Individuality

Imitation is your worst enemy• Always retain your individuality, believe in yourself and your way• The world will always know you for your individual actions• Always be original, try to innovate and leave your personal stamp on your task• Dare to be different, walk the path less-trodden

Believe in Equality

Leave all prejudices behind, every man is equal• A prejudiced mind can never function optimally• Recognize each person’s strengths and weaknesses and act accordingly• Never discriminate against someone, and you will gain everyone’s respect• Be brave enough to speak out against inequality and injustice if you see it happening around you

What are ethics?

Ethics are the ideals that you should try to adhere to• Be disciplined, be fair, be civil with everyone• Inculcating proper ethics within oneself will always lead to success• Be the change to bring about the change

Be Free and March On!

Rid yourself of all negative emotions• Inculcate positive values within yourself• Be a leader amongst men, a leader that people will look up to• Be original, be fair, be strong, be responsible• The road to success will be yours to take• March On!

The five dimensions of personality development.

Physical Self:

As the name implies, it is the proper nourishment and growth of the physical body. A healthy mind in a healthy body is the principle of the physical self. Body building and proper exercise boosts not only one’s physical strength but also the moral strength. Swami Vivekananda’s statement, ‘It would be better to play football than to read the Gita’ indicates how strongly he felt about one’s physical self.

Energy Self:

  • Energy dimension which performs digestion of food, circulation of blood, respiration and other activities in the body.

Intellectual Self:

Man has been endowed with the gift of intellect. This gift should be properly cultivated and nurtured. Reading good books and literature that stands the test of time invigorates the mind. The intellectual self is stimulated by the reading of books on philosophy, moral science, and biographies.

As Swami Vivekananda says, ‘Fill the mind with high thoughts, highest ideals, place them day and night before you, and out of that will come great work.’

Mental Self:

A strong mental self is required for the grooming up of the personality. The mind by nature is restless. It wanders here and there and makes us deviate from our objective. Full control over the mind is a must for everybody. For this, calmness of mind and concentration are necessary, and should be cultivated.

Blissful Self:

The blissful self, often called Anandamaya Kosha, is the ultimate goal of mankind. To be a man of personality one has to reach this stage where only bliss or ananda prevails. He who has reached this stage can face the world with a smile. Neither joys nor sorrow of any kind stand in his way.

All the Contents of the Universe, in One Graphic

Scientists agree that the universe consists of three distinct parts: everyday visible (or measurable) matter, and two theoretical components called dark matter and dark energy.

These last two are theoretical because they have yet to be directly measured—but even without a full understanding of these mysterious pieces to the puzzle, scientists can infer that the universe’s composition can be broken down as follows:

Component

Value

Dark energy

68%

Dark matter

27%

Free hydrogen and helium

4%

Stars

0.5%

Neutrinos

0.3%

Heavy elements

0.03%

Let’s look at each component in more detail.

Dark Energy

Dark energy is the theoretical substance that counteracts gravity and causes the rapid expansion of the universe. It is the largest part of the universe’s composition, permeating every corner of the cosmos and dictating how it behaves and how it will eventually end.

Dark Matter

Dark matter, on the other hand, has a restrictive force that works closely alongside gravity. It is a sort of “cosmic cement” responsible for holding the universe together. Despite avoiding direct measurement and remaining a mystery, scientists believe it makes up the second largest component of the universe.

Free Hydrogen and Helium

Free hydrogen and helium are elements that are free-floating in space. Despite being the lightest and most abundant elements in the universe, they make up roughly 4% of its total composition.

Stars, Neutrinos, and Heavy Elements

All other hydrogen and helium particles that are not free-floating in space exist in stars.

Stars are one of the most populous things we can see when we look up at the night sky, but they make up less than one percent—roughly 0.5%—of the cosmos.

Neutrinos are subatomic particles that are similar to electrons, but they are nearly weightless and carry no electrical charge. Although they erupt out of every nuclear reaction, they account for roughly 0.3% of the universe.

Heavy elements are all other elements aside from hydrogen and helium.

Elements form in a process called nucleosynthesis, which takes places within stars throughout their lifetimes and during their explosive deaths. Almost everything we see in our material universe is made up of these heavy elements, yet they make up the smallest portion of the universe: a measly 0.03%.

How Do We Measure the Universe?

In 2009, the European Space Agency (ESA) launched a space observatory called Planck to study the properties of the universe as a whole.

Its main task was to measure the afterglow of the explosive Big Bang that originated the universe 13.8 billion years ago. This afterglow is a special type of radiation called cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR).

Temperature can tell scientists much about what exists in outer space. When investigating the “microwave sky”, researchers look for fluctuations (called anisotropy) in the temperature of CMBR. Instruments like Planck help reveal the extent of irregularities in CMBR’s temperature, and inform us of different components that make up the universe.

You can see below how the clarity of CMBR changes over time with multiple space missions and more sophisticated instrumentation.

What Else is Out There?

Scientists are still working to understand the properties that make up dark energy and dark matter.

NASA is currently planning a 2027 launch of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, an infrared telescope that will hopefully help us in measuring the effects of dark energy and dark matter for the first time.

As for what’s beyond the universe? Scientists aren’t sure.

There are hypotheses that there may be a larger “super universe” that contains us, or we may be a part of one “island” universe set apart from other island multiverses. Unfortunately, we aren’t able to measure anything that far yet. Unravelling the mysteries of the deep cosmos, at least for now, remains a local endeavor.
